The Studio

Mancini Monica Restauro Dipinti specializes in the conservation of both ancient and modern works of art, boasting specific expertise in sectors that include restoration of paintings on wooden support, textile support and decorated architectural surfaces.
The restoration laboratory is located in Siena at Vicolo degli Orbachi no. 3 where the focus is on movable artworks coming from both public and private institutions. In addition, the work extends to museums, ecclesiastical buildings and historical residences onsite for the restoration of decorated architectural surfaces and non-transferable artworks.

History

Following theoretical and practical training obtained at specialized schools, the activity began in 1992 in Bologna through collaboration with some of the city’s most important restoration laboratories.

The work, initially carried out mainly in Emilia-Romagna region, extended later to the area of Lombardy. This is where a collaboration was born with a specialist in the conservation of historical plasters, Arch. Giampaolo Zuliani, which resulted in several restoration projects in various religious and civil buildings of the area.

Since 1999, the work of the studio has continued predominantly in Tuscany. It has been consolidated through the ongoing and continuous collaboration with the main public and private art institutions and collections in Siena such as: the National Art Gallery, the Cesare Brandi Collection, the Cultural Heritage Institute, Monte dei Paschi, the MPS Foundation, the Chigiana Music Academy Foundation, the Metropolitan Opera Museum, the Archdiocese of Siena, Colle Val d’Elsa and Montalcino, the Musei Senesi Foundation, and the State Archives.

The collaboration with the abovementioned art collections has also been developed in the area of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of their artworks, often in relation to major exhibitions not only in Italy but also in famous international museums, including the National Gallery in London, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The main restoration interventions carried out on mural paintings in Siena have taken place in the Chapel of Villa Bartalini, the Church of Santa Regina, the Museum Complex of Santa Maria della Scala, the Metropolitan Opera Museum, the Palazzo del Capitano, the Palazzo Chigi alla Postierla and the Palazzo Venturi Gallerani.

In 2015 started the restoration project of Villa Reale di Marlia near Lucca where, with a team of highly qualified collaborators, the restoration of the painted plasters, stucco work, and paintings of the Villa’s monumental collection is still ongoing.

Today

The restoration work carried out over the years, predominantly on protected assets, has always been conducted under the strict supervision of the relevant Cultural Heritage Institutes consulting proper operational choices and technical methodologies to be employed in the execution of the interventions.

A constant update on latest innovative techniques and methodologies through participation in specific courses and workshops allows for an increasingly precise and correct approach to the conservation of artworks.

The studio regularly consults diagnostic professionals engaged to perform non-invasive analysis on the works under restoration. This results in more technical and scientific understanding of existing deterioration issues and, consequently, in the development of a more informed methodological approach.

The analysis and preliminary study of the work in its multiple and complex, often interconnected aspects form the basis for the operational choices made to best respect the artwork and its history.
