The council hall of the 15th-century Rocca of Castellina in Chianti has been enriched by three precious works which, after many years, are once again visible to the public. The tempera-on-panel paintings by Cosimo Rosselli, depicting “Madonna and Child with Saints George and Francis”, by Bicci di Lorenzo, depicting “Madonna and Child with Saints Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Agnes and Augustine”, and by Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, depicting “Crucifixion with the Mourners and Saint Francis”, have regained their correct readability following a careful conservation intervention carried out over several months.
The different phases of the intervention were carried out following an in-depth study of the painted surfaces and wooden supports, which, in addition to several evident forms of deterioration, revealed a complex history of transformations, relocations and significant previous restoration interventions. Following the necessary operations to secure the paintings, the conservation work made it possible to restore their correct readability through calibrated and selective cleaning, followed by reintegration of the painted surfaces, carried out with respect for the different traces that tell their story.
